Microsoft will no longer support Windows 10 from October 14th
Windows 11 was released by Microsoft on October 5th 2021 and is the latest major version of its operating system, offering a modern, secure and efficient computing experience. It is free for any device currently running Windows 10 that meets the new Windows 11 system requirements.
From October 14th 2025, Microsoft will no longer support Windows 10. This means that from this date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, bug fixes, technical assistance or new feature releases for any Windows 10 operating system.
Computers still running on Windows 10 will then be vulnerable to potential security threats and at greater risk of malware and viruses.
Microsoft recommends that organisations migrate to Windows 11 before the October 14th deadline. Whilst most devices that meets the new Windows 11 system requirements can be updated automatically through the Windows Update service, this will only be effective if computers – and laptops – have been kept up-to-date.
In a busy business, all computers and laptops should be kept up-to-date to ensure there are no security risks due to outdated software, Microsoft or otherwise. In reality though, many businesses have a range of computers and laptop in use, with differing versions and editions of Windows 10, for example Home and Pro editions, or Enterprise, Education or IoT Enterprise editions. Nowadays with a mix of office- and home-working the norm, you are likely to have both computers and laptops, and your team may have laptops at home that need a check-up.
In addition, businesses running older hardware or even incompatible software may not be able to upgrade to Windows 11 at all, so will need to consider purchasing new computers.
Some organisations are able to purchase an extended support contract in order to keep using Windows 10 for a further year. However – any organisation that runs Windows 10 past the October 14th deadline will be putting their IT infrastructure at risk of unnecessary cyber risks.
There are some steps that your business can take now to prepare:
- Take a ‘stock inventory’ of all your computers AND laptops
- Check if your Windows 10 devices are compatible with Window 11 and eligible for a free upgrade – go to Start – Settings – Update & Security- Windows Update
- Ensure your data is backed up and secure
- Consider what investment may be needed in new Windows 11 PCs
