1994 – the year that was
Infologic is very proud to be celebrating a milestone in 2024: we are 30 years’ old this year, which means we have been serving our customers for over a quarter of a century!
Infologic was formed in 1994, and in information technology (IT) terms, 1994 is light years away from 2024.
1994 was in fact a seismic year in the development of IT – there probably hasn’t been a year like it since then.
Let’s cast our minds back to the IT landscape in the year that Infologic was established:
- Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web – IT events don’t come bigger than this and in fact, today we can safely say that this was a historical event that changed the world and the lives of its citizens forever
- Mobile phones had arrived by 1994, but were expensive. Heavy and brick-like, mobiles phones weren’t immediately popular at all, and their batteries were almost as big as the phones themselves! Mobile phones had a slow start….
- At the office, people were using desktop monitors– remember how big, heavy, and bulky they were, and how noisy the keyboards were?! We were still a year away from Windows 95, which was a game-changing moment
- Floppy disks, fax machines, dial-up and cassettes were the norm in any office environment – if your data wasn’t backed up on a floppy disk, you could almost wave goodbye to it
- The ‘cloud’ was something you looked at from your office window…
- The email overkill that we often experience today was unlikely, as email was expensive and not everyone was using it – so fax machines were still abundantly used – that dial-up tone will stay with us forever
- Microsoft founder Bill Gates wanted to show people how much information could fit on a CD-ROM, a concept that was as yet unheard of, so in 1994 he published a picture of himself suspended in the treetops above giant stacks of paper hundreds of feet tall, in order to portray the sheer number of pages of data a CD-ROM could store
- Yahoo launched in 1994, but let’s remember that if you wanted to trawl the web back then, you were using a paid, dial-up service such as AOL, and you were paying for every minute you were ‘online’ – imagine how expensive our lives would be today if this were still the case!
From then to now
Our quick-run through of 1994 above highlights just how different our working life as IT professionals was back then in our launch year. Our first contract in the UK when we launched was to supply IT systems in Domino’s pizza stores across the country – this was such a proud first step for us.
Since our launch in 1994, we’ve been serving customers in our local area, helping them to grow their businesses, and keeping their IT safe, resilient and fit-for-purpose.
We remember the floppy disks, the fax machines, and the CD-ROMs, and we’ve successfully helped our customers transition their business IT from 1994 through the years to today’s very modern era of cloud-based solutions, remote working and more. The knowledge and experience we have built up over 30 years’ means that our customers know we understand their businesses, their challenges, and how best we can serve them.
“We have used Infologic for all our IT needs since they started over twenty years ago. It is comforting to know they are by your side. Nothing is too much trouble and they are a pleasure to work with” : Alan Ashley solicitors is just one of many customers with whom we have partnered through many years of IT changes.
Looking ahead to the future, we can see some key trends that will influence information technology, and it is our job to stay on top of these changes and ensure we can help and advise our customers on the best IT solutions for their businesses:
- Information security: data-security, privacy and cyber-security will become even more important, particularly as the use of AI increases
- Cloud technologies: many businesses will embrace the use of cloud technologies, even multicloud technologies, to manage their business IT needs
And finally..
Four decades ago, Microsoft Founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen set the ambitious goal of putting a PC on every desk and in every home. Forty years later that goal has been largely achieved. Over a billion PCs are now in use in businesses and homes around the world. Microsoft has been an integral part of how our society has developed from the early 1990s.
Our intrepid leader Neil had the pleasure of meeting Bill in those early days – as you can see from our photo, he was pretty pleased to have his photo taken with him!
To all of our customers and partners, the Infologic team would like to say thank you for your custom, support and trust throughout our 30 years’ in business.
Here is to the next 30 years, whatever they may bring!
